You may be surprised...

what is in your waterThe danger of dental water first made headlines in 1999 when CBS News tested 150 dental offices and found the water in more than two-thirds unfit for human consumption. A year later, ABC’s 20/20 reported that 90% of tested dental water failed federal drinking water standards. The problem is inside dental water tubes—too small to clean, but with a high surface-to-volume ratio. Bacteria found naturally in unfiltered water multiplies quickly and clings to the inside of the tubes. The tubes become coated with biofilm—a thin slime of microbes—that is then sprayed into patients’ mouths. Especially for patients with weakened immune systems, such bacteria could be dangerous. The Occupational Health & Safety Administration, in fact, has written:

“Dental water lines have been recognized as sources of water contaminated with high concentrations of microorganisms including LDB (Legionella--legionaires’ disease).”

In 2004 the American Dental Association—concluding that line-flushing does not affect biofilm-- updated its position on dental water, stating:

“Dental unit water that remains untreated or unfiltered is unlikely to meet drinking water standards...commercial devices and procedures designed to improve the quality of water should be employed.”
